Post Procedure Update

Brecken had his 2 procedures (in the operating room since he had to be put under). The doctor found SIGNIFICANT swelling which they expect with CROUP. Further down his throat they found MEMBRANOUS TRACHEITIS. MT (too long to type every time) is bacterial so they can treat that with antibiotics. The doctor believes that is what has caused the sudden flare ups. He is back up in his room and finally getting to eat and drink for the first time today (it is after 6pm). Hopefully the antibiotics will work.

He was really thirsty when he first got back to his room - finally he asked for "snacks". I asked what he wanted and he wanted Cheetos. So, he got Cheetos. After he ate the first Cheetos, he laid back and said, "oh, I so happy!" It was adorable!

A little later, one of the doctors came in and said that this bacteria is NOT COMMON. She said that in the morning the WHOLE TEAM would come in and discuss what the plan is - how long to treat him, how to treat when he goes home, etc. She also said that since this is so uncommon that they might have the infectious disease team come in on Brecken's case. So we will know more in the morning - but for now, we are just happy he is breathing, eating (even if it is just Cheetos), drinking and FINALLY sleeping!

Oh, did I mention that the twins both have croup too. They got bad enough that my mom (and friend Carol) took them in today while Brecken was in "surgery". They saw the doctor that saw Brecken during the first few days of this and has been following what has been happening. He even knew that Brecken was in surgery right then. Anyway, the twins both got decadron (steroid that helps open the airway) and have humidifiers in their rooms. Hope everyone has a good night!

I wonder where he got it? when I got your e-mail today I thought it was something pretty rare but couldn't remember. I'm soooo glad he is at Children's! It is such a good sign that he is eating - what a cutie, I might have to send him a box of Cheetos after my conference. Are the twins sick during the day too like Brecken? Or is it more typical croup? I'm glad the same dr is aware of what is going on with them. I can't imagine having them sick too. It is hard enough for me to leave this morning for the 3 day conference with Libby as sick as she is. We'll keep praying for Brecken - and the twins now too! (and you!)
