A couple of weeks ago we had our annual Pinewood Derby! For the boys it is all about WINNING and what award they get. For me, it is all about the food and the extra little touches.
Since the Pinewood Derby is a CAR RACE, and we were just at Disneyland (and I have 5 boys that all LOVE the movie CARS), I made a little "CUBS V8 CAFE" - really just a bunch of treats relating to CARS.
I made a banner that said "CUBS V8 CAFE" to go above the food table.
I made TRAFFIC LIGHTS out of graham crackers, chocolate frosting, M&Ms and a popsicle stick. What you can't tell is that the traffic lights are stuck in a car AIR FILTER.
I made little flag signs for each dessert that I stuck in an orange cone.
I think the favorite dessert was the WHITE WALL TIRES - I made homemade Oreos but before I filled them with yummy white stuff, I cut a whole throw 2 of them using an apple corer. Then I piped the white filling in between the cookies. So so yummy!
The last dessert I made was CAR CUPCAKES. I baked yellow cupcakes and frosted them with chocolate frosting and dipped the frosted cupcakes in crushed Oreos (I crushed them in my food processor). I piped on 3 white lines to make it look more like a road. I made the little cars out of the snack sized Snickers and Milky Ways, stuck M&Ms on for wheels with frosting, cut the legs off of Teddy Grahams and used frosting to stick them on the candy bar. I just set the cars on the cupcakes - the didn't stick because of the Oreos but I think they turned out cute - I think they were cuter in person though.
I made PIT PASSES for all the boys - we had them laminated and put on string so they could wear them. The boys LOVE having these!
I also made TROPHIES for the winners this year instead of just giving them ribbons. Ed cut me triangles out of wood. I painted them blue and put vinyl on them (I cut it with my Silhouette) - 1st, 2nd, and 3rd and then whether it was Overall, Wolves, Bears, or Webelos. I bought cheap matchbox cars from Wal-Mart and spray painted them GOLD, SILVER, and BRONZE. I stuck the cars on using E-6000 glue. The boys LOVED these too!
Matthew did a GREAT job on his car! He made an Audi. He even welded the spoiler on the back - with his dad's supervision.
What a COOL car!
Go Matthew!
The guy that ran the race had the COOLEST board to show the winners. Matthew came in THIRD OVERALL so he was VERY HAPPY! He came in SECOND in the BEAR den! What a good night!
Here are the OVERALL winners - Matthew (3), Jake (1), and Brenden (2).
